I am thankful for our wonderful trip to St. Louis. We are so blessed to be able to go and visit other places as a family. I was reminded of the ease with which we travel while visiting a museum in St. Louis. Seeing the covered wagon made me very appreciative of our fast-moving, air-conditioned vehicle.
I am thankful to be home.
I am thankful for antibiotics and for the ability to take my children to the doctor and pharmacy without any difficulties or worries. I know many people in the world do not have this luxury. (My children have sinus infections, and one is having ear troubles - nothing serious.)
I am thankful for blogging! While we were gone, I realized how much I appreciate this outlet for my thoughts and the community of people who enjoy blogging as well. I hope you all have a wonderful Thursday!

This week's edition of Time Travel Tuesday focuses on first dates. In all honesty, I can't remember my first date! I am sure I was around 15 or so, but I don't really recall any special event. I do, however, remember my first date with my husband, so I thought I would share that.My husband and I met through mutual friends in college. I was friends with some of the guys on the baseball team, and my husband played baseball. Because I knew his friends, I met him. My best friend Candice's boyfriend (now husband) played basketball. We had a group who travelled to the away basketball games together, and my husband and I were part of that group. We got to know each other a little bit by travelling to the games as part of this group of friends.
I remember that my husband first asked me out in the lobby of my dorm. He asked if I wanted to go see a movie on a Friday night. I already had plans for that night, so I had to say no. I figured he would think I was just making up an excuse, so I had a mutual friend call him and tell him to ask me out for another time (why didn't I just say this to him?). A few hours later, I got an email asking if I could go to lunch on Saturday. Our group already had plans to attend a game several hours away on Saturday night, so we planned to go to lunch and then meet up with our friends for the trip.
We went to lunch at Ruby Tuesday. I don't remember too many of the details, but it must have been okay because we are married now! I do remember that it was February 4th, 2005. My husband's birthday is February 5th. Being the dork that I am, I made him a birthday cake that looked like a baseball and took it on our trip to the basketball game. We all ate the cake at a McDonald's on the way home. It must have been my excellent skills with a cake mix that won him.
I do not have a picture from our first date, but I do have one from a few weeks later. We attended a Valentine costume party as Sandy and Danny. Knowing my husband as I do now, he must have really wanted to date me; costume parties are not exactly his idea of fun.
.jpg)
And that is how it all began! We have been married for almost eleven years now, but it all started on that February day twelve years ago. For more Time Travel tales, be sure to visit Annie!

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates at Busch Stadium
On Thursday, we attended a Cardinals' game. My favorite boy was very excited to attend his first Major League game with Dad. He was also thrilled that the Cardinals were playing the Pirates. He played for the Pirates in his coach-pitch league this year, so he cheered for both teams. He wore his Cardinals jersey and his Pirates hat. Let me just say that people in St. Louis love their team, so my son garnered quite a bit of attention with his hat. While wearing it at the zoo, another child pointed at him and exclaimed, "Mom! That boy has on a Pirates hat!" Countless adults made joking comments to him during the week as well. Here are my favorite boy and his dad before leaving the hotel to go to the game. The second picture is of them at the game.
In all honesty, my favorite boy got a little bored with the game. He enjoys watching baseball on TV, and he even likes Minor League games. Major League stadiums, however, are so much bigger; the action is so much further from the seats (unless you are right behind home plate). So...much to Dad's dismay, my favorite boy wanted to spend much of the game in the Family Fun Zone. This kid friendly area has video games, a play place, and batting cages. My best girl and I arrived at the game late because she was napping. When we arrived, she also enjoyed the play area. Here she is playing on a giant pitcher's mound.
The Cardinals won, and overall, we had fun. However, I think Dad will wait a few years before taking his son to another Major League game. Dad likes to watch, and he didn't get to do much of that this time!
The City Museum
I have never visited a place like the City Museum. Basically, it is the largest, most creative playground I have even seen. The bottom floor is called Enchanted Caves. You can crawl through caves, climb into animals, and explore all kinds of tunnels and slides. Other floors contain an art studio, a circus, a toddler area, and more places to slide, climb, and explore. Outside, there is a huge playground called MonstroCity. It is made out of old airplane fuselages, an old fire truck, and more iron than you can imagine. I really can't describe any of the museum adequately, so be sure to click on the link above if you are curious to see what it looks like. Here is my favorite boy in the Enchanted Caves.
Some of the exhibits were a bit overwhelming to my best girl, but she did enjoy this slide in the toddler area.
My favorite boy loved this ball pit. There was another ball pit that was even bigger, but I called him out of there when 3 buses full of middle school kids descended on him.
If you are ever in St. Louis, be sure to check visit the City Museum! I would say that it is worth it for ages 5+. While my favorite boy could have stayed here all day, my best girl (2 1/2) would have been just as happy in the hotel pool.
The Magic House
For both of my children, the Magic House was the highlight of the trip. The Magic House was recently named the #1 attraction in the country for child appeal, and I can certainly see why. Here is a picture of my daughter playing in the Waterworks section of the museum. She loves playing in water, so this exhibit was right up her alley.
One section of the Magic House is called Children's Village. They have a grocery store, bank, electric company, restaurant, library, construction site, etc... Through the middle of the village runs a stream covered by plexiglas. You can catch a magnetic fish in the pond, take it upstream, and then watch through the plexiglas as it swims downstream to the pond. This was so cute! Both my kids spent a good deal of time catching fish and watching them swim back to the pond.
My favorite boy loves numbers, so you can imagine his delight to find this...
Another big hit was the exercise room. Here is Dad helping my best girl do some chin-ups.
I really can't do this museum justice either, so be sure to check the link if you are interested. I highly recommend St. Louis as a great place to visit with kids. There were several more places we didn't have time to visit (Grant's Farm, St. Louis Science Museum, etc...); if you visit St. Louis, you will find many fun, inexpensive places for your family to explore.
We enjoyed our trip so much! Thanks for reading all about it. Tomorrow, Dad will return to work, and we return to a normal schedule. Of course, sometimes that's as welcome as the trip itself!

The Arch
Of course, one of the highlights of St. Louis is the Gateway Arch. My kids, especially my best girl, were fascinated by it. Our hotel was across the street from the Arch, and my best girl went to the window each morning to say hello to it. Each evening, before bedtime, she said, "Good night Arch!"
After the five hour trip from our home in the Nashville, TN area to St. Louis, we headed to the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial on Tuesday afternoon to stretch our legs and visit the Arch and its Museum of Westward Expansion. My favorite boy and his Dad also took their gloves and played catch under the Arch. We enjoyed this park on several occasions throughout the week. I am including pictures from several of our visits.
Here are my three favorite people posing in front of the Arch.
Here is my favorite boy and a grizzly bear we found in the museum. There were other animals in the museum and also covered wagons, stagecoaches, tepees, etc.... Although my kids are a bit young to appreciate American history fully, they enjoyed seeing and talking about these things. We did not go to the top of the Arch. I am very claustrophobic, and I had been warned that the cars were very cramped. Perhaps we will attempt that on another visit!
The mighty and muddy Mississippi captured the kids' attention as well. There were quite a few barges and boats passing by as we stood on the bank. My best girl was ready to jump right in for a swim. She did not understand why we would not let her play in all that water.
This is the goose family we followed around in the park. They were so cute. They would allow us to get very close, and then the mother or the father, I'm not sure which, would call out and the family would waddle away from us.
On Wednesday, we went to the zoo. The St. Louis Zoo is the best zoo I have ever visited. We stayed four and a half hours and did not see everything. The kids enjoyed it so much. Both kids had a ball riding the zoo's train. My favorite boy enjoyed the playground at the Children's Zoo (a special area within the zoo). He also thought the tarantulas in the insectarium were great, and he loved the penguin habitat (brrrrrr.....).
My best girl enjoyed petting the animals in the Children's Zoo. They had guinea pigs, goats, and other animals. She also loved the butterfly house in the insectarium. The butterflies were everywhere. Every time a butterfly flew past her, she would jump and squeal with delight.
Well, that's Part One! I hope you will come back for Part Two. I will share about our trip to the Cardinals game, the City Museum, and the Magic House. Thanks for reading!

We are home from St. Louis. I am currently unpacking and doing laundry. I will post about our trip in the next couple of days. I visited blogs this week, but I didn't comment (sorry). Since we were all in one hotel room, I didn't have much quiet time to spend on the computer. We had a great time, but I am looking forward to getting back to normal this week!

Me: Ohhhh...did you fix your hair?
My Best Girl: Yes. I had to get my pretty hair out of my pretty face!
Obviously, we really need to work on boosting her self-image!
Have a great week. I'll post when we return from St. Louis!

Books
First, I would like to say that my reading has slowed down a bit lately. This is partially due to the fact that I spent some of my reading time watching the A&E and feature film versions of Pride and Prejudice. The A&E version is my new favorite movie! Additionally, my reading slowed because I read At Home in Mitford. I realize that for many of you, this book is a favorite. In its defense, the characters and setting are cozy, comfortable, and charming. Unfortunately, I found that the plot developed much too slowly for my taste, and there were too many characters for me to keep straight! I really didn't feel invested in the story until around page 300. Normally, I wouldn't have continued reading, but because it was part of the reading challenge, I pledged to finish. I did find Father Tim to be likable, but I will not continue to read any more of this series.
I also reread the Poisonwood Bible. It is a lengthy, but very well written novel. I am not going to give full review, but I will say that I didn't enjoy it as much as I did the first time. The author did an excellent job opening my eyes to the realities of life in Africa, including some of the events our country has supported that were not exactly noble. However, this time around, I was more bothered by the fact that the Christian character in the novel is portrayed as a lunatic. While I realize that many horrible things have been done in the name of Christ, I am very concerned by the way many in the media increasingly characterize Christians as crazy. Even though I did not appreciate this aspect of the novel, I would still recommend the book. It certainly helped me to have a greater understanding of a period of time and part of the world that were unfamiliar to me.
Small Talk at the Ballpark
Last week at the ballpark, I bought my best girl a cherry ring pop. She was enjoying it until several girls walked up with blue raspberry ring pops. This is what happened next.
My Best Girl: Mommy, I can't eat this sucker anymore.
Me: Why?
My Best Girl: It's choking me.
Me: It's choking you?
My Best Girl: Yes. It's choking me. I don't think I should eat it. I think I need a blue one.
Hmmmm.....
Just for the record, I was mean. She had to keep the cherry ring pop, even though it was obviously a choking hazard! :)
Meme
Hopefully, you are still reading, and you Father Tim fans have not thrown rotten tomatoes at your screen. I was tagged twice last week, by Betty and Kisses from Heaven, for an 8 random things about me meme. I decided to tell you 8 things I plan to do this week.
1) Visit the St. Louis Arch.
2) Explore the St. Louis Zoo.
3) Watch the Cardinals play the Pirates at the new Busch Stadium.
4) Enjoy the Magic House.
5) Check out the City Museum.
6) Sleep in a bed I do not have to make.
7) Eat food I do not have to cook.
8) Have fun!
Obviously, we are going to St. Louis! We are leaving tomorrow. If any of you have other suggestions for fun things in the St. Louis area, please comment. Keep in mind that we have a two year old and five year old. I will not be blogging for the rest of the week, but I will stop by to visit blogs when I have the opportunity. Have a great week!

How can it be time for Weekend Reflection? Time seems to go more quickly each week.Again, our week was a mixture of joy and sadness. On Monday evening, one of the elders of our church passed away from a massive stroke. He served our church as an elder for 32 years. Mr. H. was a wonderful man, and his daughter is one of my friends (and my favorite boy's future mother-in-law). We are so saddened by this loss, but we rejoice that he is in Heaven. His family takes great comfort in this. We attended the visitation Thursday and the funeral Friday.
Thursday evening and Saturday were my favorite boy's two final games of his rookie baseball season. He enjoyed playing so much. After Saturday's game, the boys had a pizza party and got their trophies. My favorite boy is already making plans to play "in the fall, and then next spring, and then the next fall, and the next spring..." Here is a picture with his trophy.
Please visit Judi for more Weekend Reflections. Have a wonderful Sunday!

It's Photo Hunters time again! This week's theme is cooking/cooked. I decided to go with some pictures that will stretch the theme a little bit. After all the cooking that goes on at my Aunt's house on Christmas Day, someone has to do the cleaning! I love these pictures of my best girl watching her Papa do the dishes. (You can see the remnants of all the cooked food on the counter.)
Forgive her attire. This is what she looked like before the dish washing; and you know, princesses can't dirty their gowns with dish water.
Happy Photo Hunting! For more participants, click here.

On Tuesday, I was putting my two year old daughter down for her nap. We have a routine. I change her diaper (we are working on ridding ourselves of this), put her in her crib, cover her with White Blankie, and place Pink Blankie at the foot of the crib. I then tell her goodnight and "clap the door" as I leave (she mistakenly says clap when she asks me to leave the door cracked). As I was leaving, she pushed up and said, "I love you Mom."
This is the first time she has said those special words without me saying them first. Of course, my heart just melted. Considering I spend most of my day training my darling daughter to act in a civilized and respectful manner, that moment was truly a highlight for me!
Although my best girl can be quite a handful, she is a gift! I am thankful for her and for the sweet, sweet words she shared with me this week! I hope she can remember to say them every now and then when she is a teenager! :)

This week's age for Annie's Time Travel Tuesday is 18. I turned 18 in the spring of 1992, just before I graduated from high school. That spring, my show choir traveled to New Orleans to compete in a competition (yes, we won). Last week, I shared with you my big performance hair. I am sure you enjoyed it then, so I will share it with you one more time.I do remember that the Rodney King riots happened that spring. I remember this because we were headed to Six Flags in Atlanta for our senior trip the morning after the riots began in LA. As we were driving down the interstate, a state trooper pulled our buses over to tell us that Six Flags had decided to close because the city of Atlanta was concerned about the violence spreading. We turned the buses around and spent our senior trip at Opryland. We still had a great time, but we were disappointed. Most of us had been to Opryland many times, so we were looking forward to Six Flags. Here is a picture of me in all my senior glory.
.jpg)
After graduation, I headed to Panama City Beach for a week of fun (clean fun) with my closest friends. We had a wonderful time, and we even survived a flat tire on the way down. Thankfully, the tire blew right before an exit in Cullman, Alabama, so we were able to stop and get help. We were more concerned with tans than tires, so we were thankful to be able to find someone who could change the tire! This is a picture of my friends and me behind our condo. I am the second from the left.
I remember these songs from 1992:
"I Will Always Love You" - Whitney Houston
"My Lovin' (Never Gonna Get It)" - En Vogue
"Save The Best For Last" - Vanessa Williams
"Tears in Heaven" - Eric Clapton
"Under the Bridge" - Red Hot Chili Peppers
I remember these popular movies:
Aladdin
The Bodyguard
A Few Good Men
I hope you enjoyed my trip down memory lane. Visit Annie for more participants!

Thorn in My Heart is a retelling of the story of Jacob, Leah, and Rachel from the first book of the Bible, Genesis. The author uses the Scottish Lowlands as the setting for this masterful retelling. The story begins in the autumn of 1788, as Jamie McKie schemes with his mother to steal the familial blessing that rightfully belongs to his brother Evan and continues as Jamie is forced to flee his home in search of refuge and a bride at the home of his Uncle Lachlan. After an arduous journey, Jamie arrives at his uncle's home, and the story of love, deception, and greed continues.
When I began reading this book, I had my doubts about whether I would enjoy it. I am very familiar with the story of Jacob, Leah, and Rachel, and I didn't know how interested I could be in a story if I already knew the ending. I shouldn't have worried! As soon as Jamie arrived at the home of his uncle, I was hooked. I found myself pleading with the characters to make different decisions and hoping the story would end differently than the Biblical account. I was often angry with characters on one page and pitying them on the next. Truly, for Mrs. Higgs to capture my attention and my emotions with a story so familiar was remarkable.
I will warn that Scottish words are used throughout the story. While the author includes a glossary at the end of the book, most of the words are easily understood based on the context. Additionally, I was impressed with the way Mrs. Higgs worked out certain details of the Biblical account while staying true to the historical Scottish setting. I also appreciated that reading this story allowed me to consider in greater detail the emotions and conflicts that the Biblical characters faced and inspired me to study the story another time (of course, you can never read the Biblical stories too many times).
I recommend this book, and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Fair is the Rose. Perhaps you would enjoy this book as well. Happy Reading!

Favorite Boy (grinning from ear to ear): Mom, I made you something! Let me get it.
Me (taking a sack with a ribbon from his hands): Wow! Is this my Mother's Day present? Should I open it now, or should I wait?
Favorite Boy: Pull over and open it now.
Me (after opening the bag to find his hand print, name, and date on a porcelain tile): Wow! This is beautiful! Thank you so much! I love it!
At this point my favorite boy just grinned.
Me: It was so nice of you to make this for me!
Favorite Boy: Oh well, you know mom, my teacher made me do it.
HA! And then my bubble burst!!! Oh well, he was still as cute and proud as could be, and he even let me hug him when we got home (but no kisses allowed).
Happy Mother's Day!

We have had a good week at the Baseballs and Bows household.
On Tuesday evening, the kids and I met a friend from church and her kids at McDonald's for dinner. Both our Dads were out of town, so we let the children play while we visited. The president of McDonald's was scheduled to visit this particular franchise in two days, and they had just cleaned the play place from top to bottom. It was the first time we ever left McDonald's with white socks instead of socks with black on the bottoms of the feet!
I mentioned on Thursday that I was able to see a lifelong friend this week. We had a very enjoyable visit. On Thursday evening, my favorite boy had a baseball game, and he also had kindergarten open house (a sneak peek before going in the fall). We didn't think we were going to be able to make it to the open house, but the game was called off halfway through because of lightening. So...we headed over to the school as quickly as possible. My favorite boy was able to visit the classrooms. One of the teachers had a sand table filled with beans. He decided he wants to be in her class because "she was the only teacher who had a bean table!"
Today, we went to the ballpark again. While the boys were playing, a parade went by the park in celebration of the rodeo our town is having tonight. You can imagine how an entire park full of 5 and 6 year old boys might lose their concentration when fire trucks and horses are parading down the street next to the field. It was so cute!
Tonight, we are going out to eat for Mother's Day. Our kids still nap on Sunday afternoons, so it is much easier to celebrate tonight. This will be my treat meal for the week (I am dieting), so I plan to eat whatever I desire! I really want a big, juicy cheeseburger!

My dad loves Pecan Pie. When I saw this recipe in Southern Living, I thought I would try it out when my dad came for a visit. It was a big success! I am not crazy about Pecan Pie, but I thought this was yummy. Perhaps you would like it!Caramel-Pecan Pie
1 refrigerated pie crust
28 caramels
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup water
3/4 cup sugar
2 large eggs
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 tsp. salt
1 cup coarsely chopped pecans
Fit pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate according to package directions; fold edges under, and crimp. Prick bottom and sides of pie crust with a fork.
Bake pie crust at 400 degrees for 6 to 8 minutes or until lightly browned; cool on wire rack.
Combine caramels, butter, and 1/4 cup water in large saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring constantly, 5 to 7 minutes or until caramels and butter are melted; remove from heat.
Stir together sugar and next 3 ingredients. Stir into caramel mixture until thoroughly combined. Stir in pecans. Pour into prepared crust.
Bake pie at 400 degrees for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake 20 more minutes, shielding edges of crust with foil to prevent excessive browning. Remove pie to a wire rack to cool.

And...I am thankful for my mother-in-law. She is also a wonderful example of a godly wife and mother, and she did a wonderful job raising her son to be a faithful husband and loving father. Of course, my husband says he was such a wonderful child that she had an easy job! Hmmmmm........ :)
Finally, here is a picture of my new niece. My brother is like me when it comes to hair color and ghostly white skin, so my niece can thank her beautiful mommy for that gorgeous black hair!

Last week, Annie started a new weekly meme called Time Travel Tuesday. This week is all about Sweet 16. I turned 16 in 1990. I distinctly remember that my birthday was on a Monday. I remember this because the driver's license office was closed on Mondays, and I had to wait a extra day to go and get my license. Oh, the injustice! I did not get a car when I was sixteen (I thought this was awful at the time, but I now realize my parents were wise). Our two vehicles were a mini-van and a truck. As you can imagine, I really didn't like driving the mini-van. Even now, when I know a van would be so practical, I am hanging on to my car! Most of my 16th year was spent with my boyfriend. We dated for two years, and we spent many week nights on the phone and weekend nights hanging out in the family room at my house. I also played a role in the community theater production of Camelot, and I was the Baker's Wife in our high school production of Into the Woods. My high school show choir traveled to Orlando to compete in a national competition (which we won), and we also spent several days at Disney World. It was a wonderful trip.
Here is a shot of me (on the right) with my best friend from high school during the production of Camelot. Let's just say that when I curled my hair, it was BIG! I know you are loving the blue eyeshadow, but give me a little bit of a break. I am in full make-up for a performance. I actually wore very little make-up! Please forgive the blurry image; it is a picture of a picture.

For any of you looking for a blast from the past, the following songs were popular when I was sixteen:
"Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice
"Friends in Low Places" by Garth Brooks
"Love Shack" by the B-52s
"Nothing Compares 2 U" by Sinead O'Connor
"U Can't Touch This" by M.C. Hammer
These movies were at the top of the charts:
Home Alone
Ghost
Pretty Woman
Dances with Wolves
And...the senior George Bush was president.
I hope you enjoyed the trip down memory lane! Head on over to Annie's for more participants!

My Best Girl: Where are we going?
Me: We are taking you to Home Depot.
My Best Girl (immediately crying and screaming): Noooooooo!
Dad: What is the matter? Why are you crying?
My Best Girl (still in tears): I don't want to go home with Depot!
Dad and I couldn't help but get a big laugh out of that comment! I don't know who she thought Depot was, but she certainly did not want to go with him! The next conversation took place this morning as we were leaving the Y. Let me say that my darling daughter is a little more spice than sugar. Lately, we have been dealing with some behavior issues. As I went to pick her up at the Y nursery, she came running to me.
My Best Girl: Mom, I did obey my teacher, but I'm sorry!
Me: I am glad you obeyed your teacher, but why are you sorry?
My Best Girl: I'm sorry I took that toy away from the little boy and made him cry. I just wanted it!
Obviously, we still have work to do (at least she still tattles on herself)! Have a wonderful Monday!

1. I love to eat mushrooms.
2. I am a PLANNER. I almost like planning things more than doing them (I am currently obsessed with planning our Disney trip, and we're not going until September).
3. When I was a child, I wanted to go on the Bozo show and play the Grand Prize Game.
4. I eat a banana and Honey Bunches of Oats with almonds for breakfast every morning.
5. I don't like condiments.
6. I have to wear sunglasses when I am driving, even if it is cloudy.
7. When I was in eighth grade, I performed an entire musical number in front of a large audience with the zipper on the side of my dress unzipped (I didn't know it at the time, of course). The dress had a belt, so the dress was not wide open. However, you could see parts of my skin and undergarments. I could see people in the audience smiling and chuckling, but I didn't know why. When I taught elementary school, and my students would do something to embarrass themselves, I would tell them that story, and it always made them feel much better!
There you have it! Now I tag Susan, Nan, Amberly, Dana, Jill, Lu, and Sonya. I look forward to reading your answers if you choose to play along!
